Undrafted Lions Rookie May Emerge as Dan Campbell’s New Top Pick

Lions Undrafted Rookie Could Quickly Win Over Dan Campbell

The Detroit Lions have earned a reputation for drafting well, consistently finding impactful rookies. They’ve also had success with undrafted talent, and this year’s crop includes several promising players who could make an impression during training camp.

Lions UDFA Could Become Dan Campbell's New Favorite Player

One player who might fit head coach Dan Campbell’s gritty, physical mold is undrafted tight end/fullback Zach Horton. Known for his tough blocking and old-school style, Horton played at James Madison and Indiana, bringing physicality that matches Detroit’s hard-nosed run game. Though his receiving numbers in 2024 were modest—21 catches for 189 yards—his blocking stands out as elite.

Colton Pouncy of The Athletic highlighted Horton’s fit, noting that the Lions haven’t had a true fullback since Jason Cabinda. If new offensive coordinator John Morton wants to reintroduce that role, Horton could be the ideal candidate.

While undrafted players often face steep odds to make the final roster, Horton’s toughness and skillset may earn him a place in Campbell’s heart—and potentially a spot on the practice squad, if not the active roster.
