Struggling Lions Draft Pick Could Be Released Following Rookie Minicamp
Excitement is building in Detroit as the Lions prepare to welcome their newest rookie class. After a strong showing at last week’s NFL Draft and adding more talent through undrafted free agency, the team appears poised for long-term success under head coach Dan Campbell.
The team’s rookie minicamp, which kicks off Friday, May 2, offers the first glimpse at the fresh talent. However, while fans are eager to see the future, one veteran may soon face a harsh reality when the event concludes.
Defensive Tackle Brodric Martin’s Roster Spot in Jeopardy
Despite recent draft successes, not every pick has panned out for Detroit. A notable disappointment is defensive tackle Brodric Martin, selected 96th overall in 2023 out of Western Kentucky. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 330 pounds, Martin was viewed as a developmental player with the potential to become a reliable presence on the defensive line.
Unfortunately, his rookie season fell short of expectations. Martin appeared in just three games, playing only 25 defensive snaps and recording a single assisted tackle. Injuries further hindered his progress, and his Pro Football Focus grades — 42.5 against the run and 37.9 overall — reflected the struggle.
Martin’s offseason began on shaky ground and grew more uncertain after general manager Brad Holmes openly challenged his consistency in March. “We need to see more of the consistency of the flashes,” Holmes told MLive. “We’ve had transparent conversations… he knows he needs to be a consistent player.”
With promising rookies like Tyleik Williams and Ahmed Hassanein arriving, a strong minicamp showing from either could push Martin off the roster. Cutting the 25-year-old could save the Lions over $1 million — funds they might allocate to a more dependable player.
Ultimately, Martin’s fate with the team will likely be decided by the end of minicamp next week.
