Louie Barry is expected to leave Aston Villa this summer, but a proposed move to Hull City fell through at the start of the week.
Villa and Hull agreed on a deal worth £3.5m, with Villa also including a 50 per cent sell-on clause. However, the Championship side quickly discovered that a move wasn’t going to be achievable.
According to sister title HullLive, City are no longer under a transfer embargo after settling an outstanding debt with Villa surrounding Barry’s loan in January, but the punishment for failure to make payments within a 30-day period stands, although the Tigers are appealing with a degree of confidence.
Meanwhile, Barry has other suitors in the Championship, and his value is already known, alerting other clubs to the possibility of signing him.
However, Villa’s 50 per cent sell-on clause may be a sticking point for some clubs.
Former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that either having a buy-back option or a hefty sell-on clause is vital for Villa.
“I think Villa will want some kind of buy-back clause,” Robinson told Football Insider. “I think it’s imperative that they put in a buy-back if he’s going to go on a permanent, but a loan deal would be ideal for them.
“Game-time for him at Villa is going to be unlikely this season – so whether it’s a permanent deal or a loan, I think that works for all three parties
