According to Capology, Souza takes home £30,000 per week and £1,560,000 per year at Sheffield United, although it should be stressed that those figures are an estimate.
That made Souza the Blades’ joint-second highest paid player last season, with only striker Rhian Brewster, who is out of contract at Bramall Lane this summer and is yet to sign a new deal, estimated to have earned more (£35,000 per week).
Souza is one of a number of United players who are believed to be on £30,000 per week, with Anel Ahmedhodzic, Tom Davies and Gustavo Hamer all said to receive the same salary as the Brazilian, and Adam Davies, Jack Robinson, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Kieffer Moore and Tom Cannon are next on the list at £25,000 per week.
Of course, as they prepare for a second consecutive season in the Championship, the Blades may need to reduce their wage bill a little this summer, but the negatives of losing Souza far outweigh the positives of the savings made on his salary.
However, it would have been difficult for United to deny Souza the chance to play in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, and as the club begin the search for his replacement, Selles will be hoping that the owners can use their data-led model to unearth a new midfield gem.
