WREXHAM goalkeeper Callum Burton is delighted to extend his stay at a “club on the rise”.

The 28-year-old has signed a new contract, keeping him at The Racecourse until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Burton joined the Reds last summer from Plymouth Argyle and impressed during his first campaign in north Wales.

He made four cup starts before he was handed his league debut in November against Stockport County at Edgeley Park after Arthur Okonkwo suffered a wrist injury, and immediately caught the eye with a string of fine saves.

Burton made a further three League One appearances before being sidelined for an extended period due to a thigh tear sustained in the 1-0 home win against Barnsley on December 3.

Although it was feared Burton but be out for the rest of the season, he returned to the matchday squad before the end of the campaign as Wrexham secured an historic third successive promotion and place in the Championship.

On his signing his contract extension, Burton told the official club website: “I loved my year here last year even though it got cut short by injury.

“Wrexham is a club on the rise, and I want to be able to play my part in that.”

Burton now has three promotions to his name, having previously helped Cambridge United finish runners-up in League Two before playing his part in Plymouth going up to the Championship in 2022-23.

Reds’ boss Phil Parkinson welcomed the news that Burton, who will compete with Okonkwo and new signing Danny Ward for a starting place in the second tier next term, has extended his stay with Wrexham.

“I’m pleased that Callum has signed, he did well last season and he was unfortunate to get injured,” added the Reds’ boss.

“Callum is a key component in our goalkeeping department and his value cannot be underestimated.”
