Michael Carrick’s message to Sammy Silvera sealed his move to Middlesbrough this summer, with the Boro head coach using Hayden Hackney as the example to sell the club.

Hackney became a key player for Boro last season and earned a Championship Young Player of the Year nomination after starring in Carrick’s side during an incredible run to the play-offs last season. Similarly, Silvera joins Boro after resurrecting his own career following a disappointing move to Portugal that didn’t go to plan.

Silvera joined Boro from Central Coast Mariners this summer but had plenty of other options. Boro were one of four Championship clubs who had bids accepted this summer, while there was a more lucrative offer from Japan also. But after a conversation with Carrick, the Australian was sold on the move to Boro.

Silvera said: “Michael Carrick is so chilled and he’s extremely encouraging, which is great for me. He’s just said to me, when I’m in the attacking third just do what I do and do what I was signed for. Defensively, I know I have to work hard for the team, which I know I still have to work on that side of my game. But the main bit for me is that encouragement to just express myself.
