Gus Hamer announced himself in style to Sheffield United’s fans last night. The ball-playing midfielder, a summer acquisition from Coventry City, scored a stunning goal on his Blades debut.

His exquisite right foot curler from the edge of the penalty area cancelled out After Awoniyi’s early opener at the City Ground. But Paul Heckingbottom’s troops were denied a point as substitute Chris Wood bagged a late winner for Nottingham Forest.

Reflecting on his maiden United outing, Hamer said: “It’s amazing; you can’t beat scoring on your debut. You’d prefer to score and win the game, but it wasn’t that way. I’m happy with my goal but I wanted three points more.

“I think after the first 20 minutes we didn’t deserve anything, but after that we did well. I think we dominated after 20 minutes.

“We did well to keep the ball and play our game. We were unlucky with two crosses they had and Traore had a good chance to make it 2-1 and it’s a different game then but it wasn’t that way.

“I think we showed brilliant things, we showed brilliant football. We are a good side. We have to grow into the league and injured players will come back. I’m sure we will have a good season.”

Heckingbottom was pleased with Hamer’s display but reckons there is more to come from the former Sky Blues player. “We know he’s got moments like [his goal],” said the United boss.

“It’s a great way to endear yourself to the fans. But he’s a player who’ll get better when he understands us. I love how he plays, his energy, how he risks the ball, how he takes chances.”

Newly-promoted United, still searching for their first points of the season, are back in action on Sunday, August 27 when reigning Premier League champions Manchester City visit Bramall Lane.
