A few members of Michael Appleton’s team will be having contract discussions with Charlton Athletic’s technical director Andy Scott, who also confirmed that Corey Blackett-Taylor had offers before the transfer market closed.
Recently, we mentioned Derby County’s attempt to sign winger Blackett-Taylor.
And ambitious Wrexham wanted Addicks captain George Dobson because they had the financial wherewithal to pay wages that were higher than those of many League One clubs.
At the end of June, both Blackett-Taylor and Dobson’s contracts expire.
I spoke with both agents before the window closed, Scott said to the South London Press. A few weeks after joining, I had a conversation with Dobbo’s agent. What’s the situation, he asked over the phone. Let me put my feet up on the desk, I said.
We’ll see how things turn out now that a new coach has been hired because things have changed. However, there are plans to keep and communicate with players who are no longer under contract but who we believe will be valuable to the team. For Corey, we declined a few offers. Since we made it plain that we wanted to keep Corey, Corey was fully aware of it.
“Now that the window is closed, the idea is to engage with the agents to learn how they see the situation and what we can do.
“Equally, we need to assess where some of our younger players stand. We must ascertain whether loans from the National League exist and what the strategy is. We can’t just start recruiting players that won’t help this football team.Young players that are extremely skilled are among us. Before moving on, they must get to the side and demonstrate their abilities.
“This football club has a lot of assets, but we want to assemble a squad. Every summer, we don’t want to keep switching out 11 players. Many of our players will have contracts that expire at the end of the year.
Naturally, people will lapse into obscurity. If we can, we want to keep our finest players, but occasionally circumstances make it impossible.
“We need to be aware of our financial situation and league standing. Gaining a promotion undoubtedly aids in keeping your finest players. With them in the side, there is a chance for them to perform well and for us to succeed. Additionally, try to sign them to longer terms. Ideally, this will happen in the Championship with the other players we have.
