Ilia Gruev, a midfielder for Leeds United, labels the defeat for Bulgaria as “luck.”
He believed that his country Bulgaria was “unlucky” to lose to Montenegro in their Euro 2024 qualifying match.

In the 2-1 loss to Montenegro on Sunday [10 September] at Podgorica City Stadium, Gruev played the entire 90 minutes for Bulgaria.

Currently winless in seven games with four losses, Gruev believes there are other elements at play that are working against his nation.

He was cited as stating, “We were unlucky today,” by the Bulgarian publication Trud [10 September].

“We put them under a lot of strain. We’re not lucky. I have no idea; this is football.

“In middle, I feel a lot better. I participate where the coach permits. Life doesn’t move quickly, therefore I hope we have that time.

Being a selfish person, I would say that Leeds’ top priority is that late-summer acquisition Gruev returns from international service injury-free.

The same is true for each player who is now competing in matches throughout the globe during this season’s first international window.

In the case of Gruev, paperwork prevented him from making his debut before the two-week break, so we have yet to see the midfielder in action.
There is a good chance the 23-year-old might start at Millwall on Sunday, September 17, assuming he is injury-free when he returns from his duties in Bulgaria.

Talk about going through the fire!

From his time at Werder Bremen, Gruev undoubtedly presents as a talented player, but we can only hope that the ‘poor luck’ he mentions won’t follow him to Elland Road.
