The Cincinnati Reds are in urgent need of someone in their lineup to start hitting. After a 3-7 record on their West Coast road trip, David Bell’s team is looking for a spark. Nick Martini, recalled on Tuesday afternoon, might provide that boost. Conner Capel, who had seen limited playing time since his call-up, was optioned back to Triple-A Louisville.

Martini was the talk of Cincinnati on Opening Day. His first week of the 2024 season was a resounding success, but he soon hit a slump, with strikeouts becoming a frequent issue, leading the Reds to option him to Triple-A Louisville.

This move was part of a series of roster changes earlier this season that saw both Martini and Bubba Thompson sent back to the minors. Meanwhile, TJ Friedl was activated off the IL, and Capel was given a brief opportunity to prove himself in the majors. However, much has changed since Martini rejoined the Louisville Bats a few weeks ago.

Reds admit roster mistake, recall Nick Martini after tuneup in Triple-A

Mike Ford signed a major league contract with the Reds, and Jacob Hurtubise made his major league debut. Regretfully, Friedl and Christian Encarnacion-Stand’s placement on the IL coincided with those two actions.

But Martini made the most of his time in Derby City to regain his swing. Despite appearing clueless at the plate, the 33-year-old Marinti hit during his brief stay in Louisville.364/.563/.818 with only four strikeouts, nine walks, and three home runs.

The Reds must begin to post wins in the standings and erroneous numbers on the scoreboard. This team really needs the huge bat, energy, and leadership that Martini brings to the room.
